Enjoy Your Pool During The Winter Months

Girls Swimming In Pool

One of the most enjoyable aspects of having a pool here on the Sun Coast is getting to swim during the cooler weather months, but without solar heat or a pool heater it’s usually out of the question. Bradenton, Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Palmer Ranch, Venice, and St. Petersburg, Fla., residents are used to sun, heat, and humidity, but when cool weather arrives, it’s time for fleece jackets and propane space heaters.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a solar pool heater, an electric or gas pool heater or a combination of both, you can enjoy a long, warm, luxurious swim even during cool weather. Here are some tips for keeping your pool heater working flawlessly.

The pool heater is one the most complicated piece of equipment related to the proper operation of your pool. Since electric and gas heaters pose safety and health risks, any major repairs should be performed by qualified technicians, however, there are some things you can do to make sure your system is operating at peak efficiency. These include:

  • Consider installing a pool cover. It will keep your pool heater for working too hard, and save on electric or fuel costs.

  • Inspect the pool heater and clear it of any leaves, pests, and dirt that can accumulate around or inside the unit.

  • Check wires for fraying or corrosion.

  • Clean all pool filters regularly

  • Be sure your pool skimmer is clean and unobstructed

Electric Pool Heaters

Heating elements inside your unit can become covered by minerals which reduce their efficiency. You can clean this with a wire brush but be careful not to overdo it. If the system isn’t working, check the power supply and circuit breakers.

Keep overhanging tree branches trimmed so that in the event of high winds or a storm, they don’t fall on the unit. Also keep bushes and plants away, so the system has good airflow around it. Importantly, turn off your heater and cover your pool with a solar pool blanket when it is not in use.

Professional Maintenance

Today’s pool heaters include sophisticated electronics and use high tech materials. They generally run great with excellent performance. However, making sure they are checked out by a professional at least once per season will pay for itself. Costs of hiring a professional to test out the system is far less than having to purchase a new unit before it has outlived its useful life.
